February 2016 Monthly Newsletter

Dear HCCUA Members:

Guess what!  There is a pattern that proves love is good for more than just the soul!  Love is good for your health. Research suggests that people who are in love or in long-term relationships are more likely to have stronger immune systems, lower blood pressure, maintain greater resistance to the common cold, recover faster after illness and injury, and decrease anxiety and depression.

When we discover that extraordinary connection that is “love” with another person, positivity begins to flow and your nervous system is filled with positive hormones. Dopamine, one of the hormones generated when individuals are in love, evokes emotions of pleasure, optimism, energy and a sense of well-being.

Be remaining more intellectually engaged with others, our relationships could shield off mental illnesses such as dementia.  That’s not to say that single people can get some of that same support from parents, siblings, and friends. Spouses and lovers are also helpful in identifying harmful diseases that, perhaps, you aren’t able to pinpoint in yourself.

On the other hand, being in love can also lead to self-destructive behavior like overeating. People eat more when they are together. Some believe once you have legally obligated someone to stick with you through sickness and health, there is no compelling reason to eat right and exercise.  That couldn’t be further from the truth!  Health remains key before AND after you say “I do.”

Let’s not forget that unhealthy relationships can also wreak havoc on your health! And in that case, there are plenty of perks to being single – having the bed to yourself; never waiting for the bathroom; and having all the “me time” your heart desires. According to a recent study published in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior, the mortality gap between singles and the married is closing. People are becoming more aware that eating right and being active is important for your health no matter what your marital status reads.
